Website Down Checker
This website down checker tests any site from your own connection, right in your browser. It also checks your internet, so you know if the problem is the site or you. To see if others are affected, use Downdetector and the site's status page, like Cloudflare Status.

Website status checker
Runs from your own connection, in your browser. It shows if the site answers you, not if it works for everyone.
Your internet connection
How the site down checker works
1. Your internet
Your browser reaches two well-known addresses.
2. The site
It tries the site you typed, for up to eight seconds.
3. The answer
A plain-English result and what to do next.
Any answer from the site counts as up, even an error page, because the server is still running.
Reading your results
| Result | What to do |
|---|---|
| Site responded | It is up for you. If an app still fails, check Downdetector for a partial outage. |
| No response | It may be down or blocked. Try mobile data, then check Downdetector. |
| You look offline | Restart your router, or check for an outage near you. |
Uptime checker tips for site owners
If you run a website, an uptime checker watches it all day. It tests your site every few minutes from servers around the world and alerts you when it goes down.
How to monitor my website uptime for free
- Pick a free uptime monitor. Tools like UptimeRobot have free plans.
- Add your homepage and one key page, like login or checkout.
- Turn on alerts by email or text.
- Add a public status page so users know you are on it.
- Check your host's status page when an alert fires.
Your payment provider and other tools matter too. See monitoring vendor outages.
Website status checker vs. Downdetector
| This checker | Downdetector | |
|---|---|---|
| Tests from | Your connection | Thousands of user reports |
| Answers | "Is it up for me?" | "Is it down for many people?" |
| Works for | Any website | Popular services |
| Best use | A first quick check | Confirming a wide outage |
Response time: what is fast and what is slow
When a site responds, the checker shows how long it took. That number depends on the site, your connection, and the distance between you.
| Response time | What it means |
|---|---|
| Under 300 ms | Fast Normal for big sites |
| 300 ms to 1 second | OK Common for smaller sites or far away servers |
| 1 to 3 seconds | Slow The site or your connection is struggling |
| Over 3 seconds | Very slow Often a sign of a busy or failing site |
Run the check twice. The first try can be slower while your browser looks up the site's address.
Site down checker for your own website
If you own the site and the checker says it is not responding, work from the outside in.
- Check your host's status page for an incident.
- Check your DNS provider and CDN, like Cloudflare, if you use one.
- Check your domain. An expired domain or certificate takes a site offline.
- Check your server or app logs for errors that started recently.
- Roll back the last change if the problem started right after a deploy.
A recent change is the most common cause of a site going down. That is true for small blogs and for giant clouds alike.
Why some sites block checkers
Big sites protect themselves from bots and attacks. Some of that protection can block automated checks, including tests from a browser like ours. A site can also limit how often one visitor asks for a page. When that happens, the checker may say "no response" even though the site works fine when you open it. If the site loads normally in a new tab, trust that. Our checker is a quick first test, not the final word.
Uptime checker vs. this website status checker
This page checks once, when you press the button, from your connection. An uptime checker checks every few minutes, all day, from many places, and alerts you when it fails. If you run a site, you want an uptime checker running in the background. If you just want to know whether a site is up for you right now, this page is enough.
When a site is down for everyone
This checker tells you whether a site answers you. To see if many people have the same problem, use Downdetector, and learn to read its charts in how Downdetector works. The Downdetector outage map shows whether the problem is near you. For alerts on the services you use most, set up the Downdetector app. And if Downdetector itself will not load, see is Downdetector down.
Frequently asked questions
Is this website status checker free?
Yes. The checker is free, with no sign-up and no limits. It runs in your browser, so we do not store the sites you check.
Why does the checker say "no response" for a site that works?
Some sites block automated checks, and ad blockers or VPNs can block our test. If the site loads normally in your browser, it is up. Try the check again with extensions turned off.
Can I link to a check for a specific site?
Yes. Add ?site= and the address to this page’s link, like /website-down-checker/?site=example.com. The box will fill in for you. Then press Check now.
Does an error page count as the site being up?
Yes. Any answer from the server, even an error page, means the server is running. The site may still be broken for users, so check Downdetector for a partial outage.
Why is the response time different each time?
Your connection, the site’s load, and the route between you change from second to second. The first check can also be slower while your browser looks up the address. Run it two or three times.
Can I check a site behind a login?
The checker tests whether the server answers, which works for any public address. It cannot sign in for you, so it cannot test pages that need your account.
