Downdetector Facebook: How to Read Facebook Outage Reports

Downdetector Facebook collects reports from people whose feed, login, or Messenger has stopped working. Check Facebook on Downdetector when the app acts up, and Meta Status for Meta’s confirmation. A sudden spike there is usually the first public sign of a Facebook outage, often before Meta says anything.

The outage that showed how big Facebook outages can get

4 apps

On October 4, 2021, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger went offline for about six hours. A network setting change cut Meta's services off from the rest of the internet.

On Downdetector, the Facebook chart went nearly vertical within minutes, with reports from every region. Ookla later said it was the largest outage Downdetector had recorded at that time. Every big Facebook outage since has looked like a smaller version of that day.

How to check Facebook on Downdetector

  1. Search for Facebook on downdetector.com.
  2. Read the status line. It tells you if reports are well above normal.
  3. Look at how fast the line climbed. Real outages jump in minutes, not hours.
  4. Check the most common problems listed under the chart.

Facebook downdetector reports today: three quick reads

  • Is it climbing or falling? A falling line means Facebook is recovering.
  • Is it mostly website, app, or login? If only the website fails, the app may still work.
  • Is Instagram spiking too? Compare with Downdetector Instagram. If both are up, the cause is at Meta.

Reading the Facebook outage map

Facebook outage map on Downdetector showing where problem reports come fromMANY REPORTSSOME REPORTS

The Facebook outage map shows where people are reporting from. Because Facebook has so many users, the map almost always shows some activity. A calm map with a few dots is normal.

Watch for a sudden glow in many regions at once. That is a real outage. A bright patch in one area alone is more likely a local internet problem. Our Downdetector outage map guide explains the map in more detail.

If Downdetector looks calm, the problem is probably your app, browser, or connection. Our page on whether Facebook is down walks you through quick checks and fixes.

More recent Facebook spikes on Downdetector

On March 5, 2024, many people were suddenly logged out of Facebook and could not log back in for about two hours. The Downdetector chart for Facebook shot up, and the problem breakdown was almost all "login." Instagram and Messenger spiked at the same time. That shape, one problem type across sister apps, pointed straight at Meta's shared sign-in system.

On December 11, 2024, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp failed to load for many users for several hours. Again, all three Meta pages on Downdetector rose together.

Facebook downdetector reports by time of day

Facebook's baseline is busiest in the morning and evening in the US, and quiet overnight. Because the shaded area moves with the clock, a spike at 3 AM can be real even if the number looks small. At peak times, a real outage still towers over the shaded area. Read the gap between the line and the shading, not the number alone.

Messenger and Facebook on Downdetector

Downdetector tracks Messenger on its own page. If chats fail but your feed works, check Messenger's page. If both spike together, it is Meta-wide. If only Messenger spikes, it is the chat system. Business owners should also watch the business tools section of Meta Status, since Pages and ads can fail while personal accounts work.

Facebook outage alerts

Star Facebook in the Downdetector tab of the Speedtest app and turn on notifications. You will hear about a spike within minutes, which is handy if you run a page or ads.

How long do Facebook outages last?

Most Facebook problems on Downdetector last under an hour or two. The big Meta-wide events were longer: about six hours in 2021, about two hours of logouts in March 2024, and several hours in December 2024. When the line falls back into the shaded area, try logging in again.

Frequently asked questions

Is Facebook Messenger on the same Downdetector page?

No. Messenger has its own Downdetector page. If chats fail but your feed loads, check Messenger separately. When both spike together, the problem is likely Meta-wide rather than one app.

Why does Downdetector show Facebook reports from other countries?

The US site, downdetector.com, mainly collects US reports. Other countries have their own Downdetector sites. A worldwide Facebook outage shows up on all of them at once, which is a quick way to tell how big it is.

Does Facebook confirm outages anywhere?

Meta uses Meta Status for its apps and business tools, and posts on its official accounts during big outages. It rarely explains small glitches, so Downdetector is often the only public record.

How long do Facebook outages usually last?

Most Facebook outages are fixed within an hour or two. Small ones, like a broken feed, often clear in minutes. The longest well-known outage, on October 4, 2021, lasted about six hours. Watch the Downdetector chart fall back to its baseline to see when it is over.

Does Downdetector track Messenger separately?

Yes. Messenger has its own page on Downdetector. If both Facebook and Messenger spike together, the cause is usually Meta-wide.

Why did Facebook log everyone out in March 2024?

On March 5, 2024, a problem with Meta’s sign-in system logged many people out of Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger for about two hours. Meta said a technical issue caused it.
