Internet Outage Today: Is the Internet Down Right Now?
To check for an internet outage today, open the Downdetector homepage. If many unrelated apps spike at once, a big cloud or network provider is likely down. Cloudflare Radar confirms large disruptions by country. Our daily log of major outages is below.

Was there a big internet outage today? Find the common link
When several big apps spike together, they usually share one provider. Match the pattern:
Check Cloudflare
Check AWS
Check Microsoft
Then confirm on the official page: Cloudflare Status, the AWS Health Dashboard, or Microsoft service health.
Nationwide outage or local outage?
Nationwide
Reports from every state at the same time. Many people, many places.
Local
One city or region. Only your street or town is offline.
If only your home or neighborhood is down, see internet outage near me to check your area.
Why is the internet down today?
| Where it starts | What happens |
|---|---|
| Cloud providers | AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud fail in one region, and thousands of apps fail with them. |
| Network providers | A bad update at a company like Cloudflare breaks millions of sites at once. |
| Fiber cuts | A cut backbone line slows traffic across a region. |
| Software updates | A faulty update, like CrowdStrike in July 2024, crashes computers worldwide. |
| Phone carriers | Mobile internet fails. See cell phone outages today. |
Outage today news: how we choose what to list
We list outages that are big, affect US users, and are confirmed by an official source or trusted news. Each entry links to its source. Small or local outages are left out. For a live view, see Downdetector live or the best internet outage maps.
During a big outage
Wait: most are fixed within a few hours. Do not reinstall apps or reset your phone. Use another service for urgent tasks, like a different email or payment app.
The biggest internet outages of the last two years
These show how one failure can feel like "the internet is down."
| Date | What failed | Who felt it |
|---|---|---|
| July 19, 2024 | A CrowdStrike update crashed Windows PCs | Airlines, banks, hospitals, stores |
| Oct 20, 2025 | AWS in Northern Virginia | Snapchat, Fortnite, Venmo, and hundreds more |
| Oct 29, 2025 | Microsoft's Azure Front Door | Microsoft 365, Outlook, Teams |
| Nov 18, 2025 | Cloudflare's network | X, ChatGPT, and many sites |
| June 22, 2026 | A backbone fiber cut | X, Reddit, Teams, and Zoom |
Each one is explained in plain English on our pages for AWS, Cloudflare, and Microsoft.
Nationwide outage: is it the internet or my provider?
There are two very different things people call an internet outage. A cloud or network outage breaks certain apps and sites for everyone, but your home connection still works: Google loads, and the broken apps do not. A provider outage cuts your home off completely: nothing loads at all.
The test is simple. Open a big site like google.com. If it loads, your internet works, and the problem is a cloud or app outage. If it does not load, check your provider and the modem lights.
How we track the outage today news
Every day, we review the Downdetector homepage, the status pages of the biggest clouds and networks, and trusted tech news. An outage makes our log when three things are true: it affected many US users, it lasted long enough to matter, and an official source or a trusted outlet confirmed it. We add the date, what failed, who was affected, and a link to the source.
We do not list rumors, local blips, or spikes that the company said were not outages. That keeps the log short and useful. If you want every small spike as it happens, the Downdetector homepage is the place to watch.
Outage today vs. outage right now
"Today" covers the last 24 hours, so it includes outages that are already fixed. "Right now" means it is happening at this moment. Downdetector's chart shows both: look at the right edge for now, and the whole line for today.
Why is the internet down today? Questions to ask
- Which apps fail? If they all use the same cloud, that cloud is the likely cause.
- Is it every device? If yes, check your home internet first.
- Is it your area only? Zoom in on the Downdetector map.
- Is the power out too? Then it is a power problem, not the internet.
- Is there a big event? Huge live streams and sales can slow some services.

Frequently asked questions
Is the whole internet down?
Almost never. The internet is made of many separate networks. What usually happens is that one big provider, like AWS or Cloudflare, has a problem. That makes many popular sites fail at once, so it feels like the whole internet is down.
How often is this page updated?
We review this page every day and add major US outages once they are confirmed by an official status page or a trusted news source. For live, minute-by-minute data, use Downdetector and the official status pages.
Where can I see live outage news?
For live updates, check Downdetector and the status page of the service that is down. Big outages are also covered quickly by tech news sites and the service’s own social media accounts.
Should I restart my router during a big outage?
Only if your own internet is down. If websites like Google load but a few big apps fail, the problem is those apps or their cloud provider. Restarting your router will not fix it.
Was there a big internet outage today?
Check the Downdetector homepage for many services spiking at once, then the status pages of big providers like AWS and Cloudflare. Our log on this page lists major confirmed US outages.
How can I tell a cloud outage from my own internet being down?
Open google.com. If it loads, your internet works, and the broken apps share a cloud or network problem. If nothing loads, your home internet or provider is the problem.
