Is Downdetector Down? How to Tell and What to Use Instead

Is Downdetector down, or just not loading for you? Test downdetector.com with the checker here, then look at Ookla's status page, the company that runs it. Downdetector rarely goes down on its own, but it can fail during huge internet outages.

Run the checker, then try Downdetector on mobile data. The two answers tell you where the problem is.

Downdetector not loading? Quick fixes

If Downdetector works for others but not for you, try these in order:

  1. Refresh the page, then try a private window.
  2. Pause your ad blocker for downdetector.com. Some stop the chart from loading.
  3. Turn off your VPN.
  4. Clear your browser cache, or try another browser.

Downdetector not working today: why it happens

Real Downdetector outages are rare. When they happen, it is usually one of three things.

Traffic rush. When a big app fails, millions of people open Downdetector at once.

Internet-wide outages. Downdetector uses Cloudflare. During the Cloudflare outage on November 18, 2025, some people could not load it.

Server down at Ookla. Like any site, its own systems can break.

Backup ways to check while Downdetector is down

Official status pages

Search for "[service] status," like Discord Status. These come from the company.

Our website checker

Test the service's site with our website down checker.

Social media

Search X for "[service] down" and sort by Latest.

Other outage sites

Our Downdetector alternatives guide compares them.

If Downdetector and many other sites fail together, check Cloudflare Status and the AWS Health Dashboard. One big provider is usually the cause. Still unsure? See is it down for everyone or just me.

Downdetector outage history: when it has struggled

Downdetector is built to handle huge traffic, because outages are exactly when everyone shows up. Most of the time it stays up even when the services it tracks fall over. The rare problems come in a few patterns.

  • Shared infrastructure fails. Downdetector sits behind Cloudflare. On November 18, 2025, when Cloudflare crashed, many people saw error pages on Downdetector too.
  • A record rush. On the day of a giant outage, like AWS on October 20, 2025, pages can load slowly because millions of people check at once.
  • Your own network. Most "Downdetector is down" moments are really a blocked site, a VPN, or a browser extension on one device.

Read the error you see

What you seeWhat it usually means
A Cloudflare page with a 500 or 502 codeCloudflare or Downdetector's servers have a problem. Wait and retry.
"This site can't be reached"Your internet, DNS, or a network block. Try mobile data.
Page loads, but no chartAn ad blocker or privacy extension stops the chart script.
Endless "checking your browser"A security check that your browser cannot pass. Try another browser.
Very slow pageA traffic rush during a big outage. Give it a minute.

Downdetector not loading on one device only

If Downdetector works on your phone but not your laptop, the laptop is the problem. Work through these in order.

  1. Open a private window. If it loads, an extension or stored cookie is to blame.
  2. Turn off extensions one by one, starting with ad blockers and privacy tools.
  3. Clear cookies for downdetector.com only, so you do not lose other logins.
  4. Check your DNS. If you use a custom or filtering DNS, it may block the site.
  5. Update the browser, since old versions can fail security checks.

On a work or school laptop, the company network may block the site on purpose. Ask the IT team, or check from your phone on mobile data.

Downdetector outage on the app vs. the website

The Downdetector tab in the Speedtest app and the downdetector.com website share the same reports, but they load in different ways. If the website shows an error while the app still loads charts, the website has a hiccup, and you can keep checking in the app. If the app fails on mobile data and the website fails on Wi-Fi, Downdetector itself is likely having trouble.

Server down, or just a slow day?

A slow Downdetector is not the same as a server down. If pages load after 10 or 20 seconds, the site is up but busy. That often means a big outage elsewhere, so the slowness itself is a clue. Check the homepage once it loads: the service at the top is probably why everyone is there.

If nothing loads after a few tries on two networks, treat it as a real Downdetector outage and switch to the backup checks above. Status pages from the service itself are the most reliable source anyway. Our official status pages directory lists them.

When Downdetector is back

Once the site loads again, the Downdetector outage map shows whether the problem you were checking is local or nationwide. To get a heads-up next time instead of checking by hand, set up alerts in the Downdetector app. Curious why it can lag during big outages? Read how Downdetector works.

Frequently asked questions

Does Downdetector have a status page?

Ookla, the company that runs Downdetector, has a status page at status.ookla.com. It is mainly for business customers, but it can show if Downdetector’s systems have a known problem.

Why is Downdetector slow during big outages?

During big outages, millions of people visit Downdetector at once to see what is happening. That rush can slow the site down. Try the Downdetector section of the Speedtest app, or wait a minute and refresh.

Is Downdetector blocked on my network?

Some school and work networks block sites they do not need. If Downdetector loads on mobile data but not on that Wi-Fi, the network is likely blocking it.

Can I still use the Downdetector app if the website is down?

Often, yes. The Speedtest app loads Downdetector data in its own way, so it may work while the site has trouble. If both fail, Downdetector itself is likely down. See our Downdetector app guide.

Why does Downdetector say "checking your browser"?

That is a security check that blocks bots. It usually passes in a few seconds. If it loops, turn off your VPN, allow cookies for downdetector.com, or try another browser.

How long are Downdetector outages?

Usually short, from a few minutes to an hour or two. They tend to happen when a provider it relies on, like Cloudflare, has a wider problem.

Is Downdetector down in my country only?

Downdetector runs separate country sites, like downdetector.com for the US and downdetector.co.uk for the UK. One can have trouble while others work. Try the US site directly if a country page fails.
